Justice Yahya Afridi appointed as Chief Justice of Pakistan

The meeting of the special committee is going on to finalize the name of the new Chief Justice of Pakistan. The parliamentary committee has agreed on Justice Yahya Afridi for the new Chief Justice.

Sources say that the majority of the parliamentary committee agreed on Justice Yahya Afridi as the new Chief Justice of Pakistan.

PTI refused to sit in the meeting. Speaker Ayaz Sadiq and Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal went and tried to persuade the PTI members. Barrister Gohar said that he and his people would not sit in the meeting.

Earlier, PTI’s Barrister Gohar, Barrister Ali Zafar and Sunni Ittehad Council’s Sahibzada Hamid Raza did not attend the evening meeting.

Prime Minister Nazir Tarar had tasked four government members to convince PTI members. Constitutionally, the committee can take a decision without PTI members.

The closed room meeting of the Special Parliamentary Committee is ongoing in the Committee Room 5 of the Parliament House. Despite the boycott of the meeting, there are seats for 3 members of the Sunni Unity Council. Nameplates of 12 members have also been installed there including Ali Zafar, Barrister Gohar and Hamid Raza.

Raja Pervez Ashraf, Farooq H Naik, Kamran Murtaza, Rana Ansar, Ahsan Iqbal, Shaishta Pervez Malik, Azam Nazir Tarar, Khawaja Asif are also present in the committee meeting.

Earlier, the meeting of the 12-member Special Parliamentary Committee started today afternoon, which was adjourned shortly after until 8:30 pm.

Sources say that the names of 3 judges sent by the Secretary Law for the appointment of the Chief Justice were presented in the committee.

The appointment of the new Chief Justice of Pakistan is likely to be approved in the meeting today, the 3 most senior judges of the Supreme Court include Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, Justice Muneeb Akhtar and Justice Yahya Afridi.
